Cowboys, Portland, New York, and Castle Rock

I went to Cowboys last night. It was the first time I've been to the downtown location and I was very impressed. Nice room, nice bar, and the sound was pretty good for such a big place. There were about 400 people packed into the joint, maybe a little more at times.

The event was a benefit for Kids with Cancer, and though I care about kids with cancer, I was there to see the "Up and Coming " country stars on stage. There were 10 artists, all with 1 or 2 side people and all really quite good. I caught the last 4 acts having missed the first 6 due to a late massage patient and then my son's math homework. I love being a parent. I love being a parent. I love . . . keep reminding yourself Joe. I caught "Bombshell" (an appropriately named blonde female duo), Sarah Buxton, Easton Corbin and Chris Young. Chris Young has a current hit entitled "The Black Dress Song" which supposedly is about #2 or 3 on the country charts. It went over great at the club.

Why write about this tonight? First, it was really great to see some national acts in a nice club downtown. It speaks volumes about how far we've come in the scene downtown. Between Cowboys, Stargazers, Studio B, and The Thirsty Parrot we've got some great concert venues, all within a mile of downtown. (Speaking of Stargazers, I'm playing there on Friday, Dec. 4th. My 50th birthday party, replete with a bunch of old music partners and some interesting new songs. Put it on the calendar, folks. It's going to be a coming out party. I'm goin' country. . . AH!) It was also really inspirational for me to see "the up and coming country music stars" and see how really pretty ordinary they are. Yes, they are all good looking. Yes, they are solid musically. Yes, they have really great voices. Ok, strong songs as well. Ummm, I take it back. They aren't ordinary. My point is that I've seen a lot of acts come through here in the last 20 years, and quite honestly, we have a lot of talent here. I saw 8 guitar players the other night. None of them was better than Phil Volan or Joe Chalot. Different, but really not better. Of course, they are all playing lead and rythym in a noisy bar trying to capture an audience during a 6 song set. Pretty tough to do. I really liked what I saw, but I was not blown away. I was really taken with Sarah Buxton (c'mon, can that be her real name?) who had a really sweet voice, had good songs and was simply as cute as a button with her high heels, mini skirt and plunging V neck sweater top. I love my wife. I love my wife. I love. . . .

And the songs were all good, but my muse (who has been fuming silently for months now, waiting for me to get my writing shit together again, chain smoking, shooting rot gut whiskey, snippin' at me from the threadbare sofa where she's been watching "Oprah" and reruns of "Friends" . . . the bitch) just about stripped naked at the club and wanted to jump up on a table and grind the first available cowboy but thank God I kept her under wraps. . . um. . . My point was, she was freaking out because she knows she's given me 50 songs that were as good as anything I heard last night, but I never finish them because they're "country" and, you know, that just ain't what I do. I tried to hold her, but she just kept pointing at me with her "lazy, good for nothing, sorryassedwannabesongwriter" finger and I knew she was right. I've just been lazy.

So I came home and couldn't sleep. Started 2 songs, one called "Buck Back Baby", the other "Old Enough". Made a lot of progress on one. Pulled out some of the original 50 and started to run through them again, which shut the hoary bitch up for a bit, but she won't let up for long. What's next? I guess it's back to work. Why do you write? Because you just can't not write. Because you just can't not. . . write.
