"The Mainline Adventure (for guys only) and the last show of the year. . ."

An email for guys only. Ladies, you can just skip to the gigs below. BTW, if you'd like to be removed from my email list, just shoot me back an email. Thanks.

I heard the sound from the kitchen. It resembled a small water fall and I immediately identified it as coming from our basement. I did the mental check. Washing machine running entering the spin cycle. Daughter in the shower for more than 5 minutes. Uh-oh. Mainline is clogged. This took about 1/2 a second. I screamed to Katie to turn off the shower as I ran downstairs to turn off the washing machine. About 4 gallons of water were spreading out over the floor.

The next morning I drove to Home Depot to rent a 100 foot "snake" to roto root out the mainline. I've had to do this every 18 months or so since we purchased our 1948 home in the Ivywild neighborhood. Tree roots are the culprit, but I guess it is a small price to pay for the magnificent maples we have in our front yard. I wheeled the snake into the back yard and into our basement from the back door. I hung the appropriate protective cloth around the walls to keep the waste water from being spun onto my new paint job (from 2002, Ok, relatively new.) I found my beater leather gloves to protect my hands so that when I fed out the steel cable I wouldn't lose a finger. I opened the access port and began to drill. I got about 8 feet down into the pipe and could immediately tell something was wrong. The cutting tool on the front of the snake, a U shaped tool used to rip out the roots, wasn't functioning correctly. I pulled out the snake and found that the tool had broken off . . . inside my main line.

Unfazed because I had paid for the insurance in case something breaks, I replaced the tool with a more durable though less root unfriendly tip and started over. (Replacement parts were included) It took about an hour to snake the mainline out 3 times. I got a lot of roots out and one tampon. . . No comment. All the while the snake is whipping around in the pipe I can hear the broken off "U" tool clanging inside my mainline. The last time I pulled the snake out, I could hear the tool about 5 feet down in the pipe at the bottom of a 90 degree corner. How the heck was I going to get the dang thing out? I started the clean up and then had a brainstorm. In my tool case was a fairly strong and good sized magnet. I got out my trusty new roll of duct tape, placed the magnet on the end of the snake and wrapped it good and tight with the tape. I fed it carefully down into the pipe, with a couple gentle revolutions to get it past the 90 degree angle. I heard the click. Carefully I pulled up the snake and, viola, there on the end of the magnet was the broken tool. I was positively smug with pleasure.

I took the snake back to Home Depot with time to spare. I told them about the broken tool and handed them the part. Immediately the guy looked at me and asked how I'd gotten it out of the pipe. Casually I responded in my most testestesterone tinted voice, "Magnet". Just a hint of admiration was relayed in his nod.

I'd have paid $66 just for that moment.

The digs on gigs. Almost nothing public, but a fun final show for the RUB tomorrow night.

Thank you all for your positive attitudes and ongoing emotional support.

On Dec. 5th there are two events happening neither of which involve me, but they are BOTH good causes. The Earthseeds Foundation is hosting a pottery sale/ house concert at the home of my friend Ed Marcus 2010 Wyncoop Drive. Colorado Springs. Performing that evening will be Leo Tanquay, Danny Pitcher (yes,THE Danny Pitcher) and Rachel Haymer. $10 for an very fun evening. 6-9pm Call 636-3639 for info.

Also on Dec. 5th and ALSO a very good cause, The Manitou Community Congregational Church is hosting a benefit concert for Westside CARES with Johnsmith, a wonderful singer/songwriter who's been traveling the country for at least 15 years now. He's been a Lyons Folk Fest songwriter finalist a # of times and is a top notch performer. Anyway, contact Mary Frances Kerr mfkerr@qwestoffice.net for showtime and other info. Tickets are $15 in advance so call ahead of time. The church is at 103 Pawnee Ave.

Love on all. . . BTW, plan your Christmas shows now! I'd love to do a few more band gigs at some Christmas parties again this year. KJ, Susan and the boys would as well. Love to you all for the Christmas Season and beyond. Joe Uveges. . . .
